The Apprentice - Project Based Team Building Activity
The idea of even creating a TV commercial, let alone in under 2 hours, is a daunting assignment. And that’s how we like it.
The group is briefed that within 2 hours, small project teams will create their own ad.
That means plan, storyboard and filming. Teams are randomly assigned a household item, or use your own values or vision.
As an alternative in The Apprentice, we can assign a charity to each team with the goal of creating a TV commercial that best communicates the goals of each charity.
The perfect creative, project-based team building activity.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is supplied?
Each team will have a video camera, storyboard and props to use to shoot their TVC.
Is any AV required?
We have a short presentation to brief everyone so ideally a screen/audio is required, however we can do it without it.
What if it rains?
Filming can take place indoors or outdoors so it's an all-weather activity!
What if people don't want to be on camera?
We'll encourage everyone to take part but there are plenty of off-camera roles to complete.
The Apprentice is a fun and exciting creative journey, modeled loosely off the TV show of the same name. In short, project teams are formed and tasked with a challenge. They must decipher a creative brief and create a TV commercial.
It all starts with a briefing and a showcase of real-world TV commercials that show advertising styles and storytelling techniques.
Next, we form smaller project teams, each tasked with generating ideas based on their chosen theme. But don’t stress, you’re not alone. Our on-site creative team (creative / filmmakers in their own right) will be there to guide and inspire your team.
With over 16 years crafting creative experiences, our team know how to deliver activities with clear outcomes and also know how to bring the fun. They’ll steer teams through the idea stage to storyboarding to capturing it on film.
With filming complete, each team will write a detailed project plan for the editing team in The Apprentice, before the magic begins to turn 2 hours of hard work into a fun and polished video to playback.
For other creative team building activities, you can check out our range of innovative and learning-based team experiences.
Once all teams have filmed their scenes and completed their storyboards, our creative experts take over to edit the final video, which will be ready for playback within 24 hours.
EXPRESS EDIT
If you’re in a rush or just super keen to watch your videos back at the end of your conference, we offer express editing onsite. With a turnaround as quick as 2 hours, our creative team will edit your videos.
This means you can have the completed videos, dust off your formalwear and get ready for the premiere of your hard work on the big screen!
EXAMPLES
Here’s a handful of examples of some previous events:
Working in project teams offers many advantages, including recognising and leveraging skillsets within the group and assigning roles.
Team members share concepts, exchange ideas and engage in meaningful and targeted teamwork to reach their objective and manage time effectively. It’s a safe place for groups to share ideas without any real risk of failure.
The Apprentice is largely a non-competitive team building activity where team members are working towards a shared common purpose.
Here are some expected outcomes from The Apprentice:
- Stronger Collaboration: Participants work closely under time pressure, learning how to share ideas, delegate tasks, and support each other effectively — all essential skills for high-performing teams.
- Improved Communication: Success depends on clear, open communication. Teams quickly learn to express ideas, give feedback, and stay aligned on a shared vision.
- Creative Problem Solving: With limited resources and time, teams must think on their feet, adapt quickly, and develop creative solutions — just like in real business scenarios.
- Shared Purpose Without Competition: Because it’s non-competitive, the focus stays on teamwork, inclusion, and achieving a shared goal — reinforcing unity and mutual respect across departments.
