Billy Kart Derby: Outdoor Charity Team Building

This outdoor charity team building activity is packed full of fun and laughs and has been a successful conference activity like Red Bull Billy Kart Derby and KFC Billy Kart Derby for both the companies, Red Bull Australia and KFC.

We kick off by introducing our charity partner and talk about the positive impact these fun little karts will have for the kids and families who receive them.

Teams then build and decorate their kart using spray paint, markers and stencils to bring them to life.

We have an honorary tradition that teams need to create a 30 second dance to the song of their choice as a way of introducing their billy kart to the race arena.

It’s then time to toll your sleeves up for a series of fun challenges where teams earn points that go towards the finale – a time trial obstacle course where the rubber hits the road.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we race the karts?
Yes the final challenge is a time trial race. The karts are kid sized, so your driver selection will be imperative!
What kind of space is suitable?
The final race needs a hard surface, so outdoor hard courts or parks with paths. We can help with venue options.
What if we're not handy?
That's all good. We'll have a mechanic onsite to check the karts before you, or any kids, get into them.
Can we run it indoors?
There aren't too many indoor spaces that are suitable. But lets chat about possibilities!

The day kicks off with a mission: build, pimp, and proudly present your billy kart. Armed with spray paint, stencils, and your wild imagination, you’ll transform raw frames into rolling masterpieces.

Of course, you can’t just roll into the race untested.

First, your team needs to earn their parts and privileges through a series of ridiculous but highly competitive mini challenges.

Think tug-of-war with a twist, pedal-powered relays, and brain-busting puzzles that will leave you laughing, sweating, and plotting revenge on the team next to you.

Then comes tradition: the world-famous 30-second “Kart Dance.” This is your chance to show off your kart (and possibly your questionable rhythm) as you strut, shimmy, or body-roll your way into the race arena.

Bonus points for costumes, hair flicks, and jazz hands.

The final showdown? A timed obstacle course where the wheels meet the wobbles.

Billy Kart Derby isn’t just about fast laps and spray paint fumes — it’s about heart. Every kart you build is donated to kids who’ll ride them with joy, pride, and maybe a few scraped knees (the good kind).

Billy Kart Derby is ideal for:

  • CSR & Social Impact Events: A meaningful way to align your team activity with real community outcomes.
  • Team Building Days: Blend problem-solving, collaboration and heart in one unforgettable session.
  • Offsites & Conferences: Break up the business agenda with something that gives back in a big way.

What your team walks away with:

  • Shared Purpose: Give back while having a blast.
  • Team Spirit: Bond over bolts, paint, and race-day glory.
  • Collaboration in Action: Delegate, strategise, improvise.
  • Real Impact: Your kart = real-world fun for real kids.

It’s CSR with horsepower.

Billy Kart Derby needs space to roll — and some hard surface so those little wheels can get some traction – so grass or lawns don’t quite work.

Hard tennis or sports courts, pathways or carparks with enough room for a finish line photo finish.

Thankfully we’ve scouted some gems in Sydney and Melbourne (and we can hunt for a suitable site if you need guidance).  We’ll handle the logistics, set-up, and make sure there’s enough track to test your kart’s speed (or lack thereof).

Perfect for conference breaks, team offsites, or even an end-of-year showdown.

You can keep it as a simple activity or we can add in loads of extras to create a full event like we did for KFC and Red Bull Australia.

Think: Onsite DJ, catering and drinks, ramps and obstacle courses, promo signage.
